Commander McCain was an old friend of the family; Ron had first met him in Manilla in 1927, when the Commander had shown Ron and his mother around the city. (Ron's journal records McCain and he visiting a ruined Spanish fort supposedly filled with treasure.)

Of all the recommendations, this is the least egregious - probably because McCain was close enough to the family to know the real Ron, rather than the fanciful image presented to everyone else.
