Here is my press release for my Answer and Counterclaim which served today to be filed tomorrow in the U.S. District Court: FOR MORE INFORMATION CONTACT: Grady Ward (707) 826 7715 grady@northcoast.com http://www.northcoast.com/~grady/Welcome.html April 10, 1996 GRADY WARD ASKS FOR $50 MILLION IN PUNITIVE DAMAGES IN CLAIM AGAINST THE CHURCH OF SCIENTOLOGY ARCATA, CALIFORNIA - Grady Ward answered an $11 million dollar lawsuit filed by the Church of Scientology last month with a denial of all wrongdoing and a countersuit alleging the church has conspired to deprive him of his right to free speech. He asks for $50 million dollars in punitive damages and an order restraining the Church of Scientology from unlawfully harassing critics on the Internet computer network. Showing photographs stolen last year by Eugene Martin Ingram, a long time church private investigator, he asks: "what kind of church tries to intimidate critics by stealing his children's pictures from his mother?" In a similar suit against a church critic last fall, U. S. District Court Judge Leonie M. Brinkema of the Eastern District of Virginia wrote: "However the Court is now convinced that the primary motivation of the RTC [Scientology] in suing Lerma, DGS, and the [Washington] Post is to stifle criticism of Scientology in general and to harass its critics." The founder of Scientology, the science-fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard taught that critics of scientology should be attacked and "…if possible, utterly destroyed. The purpose of a lawsuit is to harass, not to win." Hubbard's sacred teachings continue that critics "May be deprived of property by any means by any Scientologist without the discipline of the Scientologist. May be tricked, sued, or lied to or destroyed." -30- Grady Ward | | http://www.northcoast.com/~grady +1 707 826 7715 | | (voice/24hr FAX) | 34877c8566839cb7 | grady@northcoast.com | aeab8ec5e5ee97fe |
