The Scientology student must have an "Ethics clearance" before they can see "any medical or healing practitioner." The only exceptions are infectious diseases and sever injuries. This being the case, I interpret this policy to mean that auditing will most likely take care of the physical illness. Why would they want sick students when a trip to the doctor could clear up a physical problem? The only logical interpretation is that the physical problem is expected to be handled by the auditing. Also, in front of every green volume I have is a note "To the Reader". It is basically a medical disclaimer, stating that "although the Church, as are all churches, is free to engage in spiritual healing, it does not, as its primary goal is increased knowledge and personal integrity for all." Granted, these volumes were published in 1969, before NOTs was published. I would like to know if this statement has been rescinded by some later statement? Notice that it clearly states the Church "does not" practice spiritual healing. It also later states that the e-meter "in itself, does nothing" and is just used for finding spiritual problems. Again, it does not state that the E-meter is used for physical distress. So in one volume here we have on one page a statement that the Church does no spiritual healing, while on another page Scientology students are told they can't go to a doctor without permission. Very strange.
